A few weeks ago a friend of mine was in a serious car accident. The scene involved a horrific traffic jam, a helicopter, ambulances, and sadly, a fatality. Fortunately, my friend received only minor scrapes and bruises. A week later, she told me that she now had complete clarity about how to handle a business dilemma with which she had been grappling in prior weeks. With her renewed comprehension of how precious life is, she realized that she had the power to propose her own terms on this business deal rather than accept the less attractive conditions that were on the table. This past winter I was comforting a friend after her mother’s funeral. Emotionally spent from the service and reception that followed, we sat at home that evening with her family. Her sixteen-year-old daughter had been so poised and mature, as she received condolences for the loss of her grandmother. It was a school night after a very long day and she was exhausted. She cried as she explained the dilemma to her mother. She wanted to stay home from school the next day to catch up on the work she had missed, but she had to go to class because her two cousins had decided that they were going. How would it look to the teachers if her cousins showed up and she was home? Read more
My first foray into yoga was about ten years ago when a friend and I decided we would take a class together. It occurred in the early evening, so to get there on time, we would have to dash out of the office and fly up the interstate. After having left the first class feeling ravenous, we became concerned about taking care of our stomachs (nothing new for us) before class. Picture the second week: two hungry women speeding up the highway while engulfing overstuffed meatball sandwiches. In the middle of class, out of the corner of my eye, I saw my friend cowering in the corner with a cramp in her side, the lead-like meatballs making their presence known. I tried to keep from laughing and tough it out. Ironically, it was the week the teacher decided to tell us about the yogic lifestyle which included a mostly vegetarian diet and practicing on an empty stomach. Read more
Karen was on her way to the airport after a meeting, with two hours to spare before her flight. In a split-second decision, she drove thirty minutes out of her way just to have a quick visit to the beach. As her feet crossed the sand and met the water, she reveled in having claimed some playtime. “I was totally laughing at myself. It felt great to let the free-spirited side of my personality free.” Her time at the beach only lasted twenty minutes before she had to head to the airport but that was all she needed to feel free. It wasn’t something she was accustomed to allowing during a workday, yet the fact that she had done it so easily this time let her know she could do it again. Read more
Nearly ten years ago, I was at that point in my corporate career of contemplating what was next. I applied for a different internal job which appealed to me somewhat, though not completely. I didn’t get it. I decided the next step would likely be outside the company though I let it be known to senior management that I was eager for something new to do. (That’s code for not quite flipping out yet but getting there). Along came a high exposure, though somewhat risky project that had no guarantees of obtaining funding or support. Perfect, I’ll take it! Read more
Over the last few years, my sister, Lori, has twice delivered eulogies at the funeral services of our beloved aunts. In each case, her remarks conveyed cherished memories and the unique characteristics of both women whom we admired and loved. At the end of the most recent funeral, my cousins gathered around Lori to thank her for expressing what was in their hearts. They also joked with her and asked, “Will you write mine next?” Despite the laughing, there was a twinge of gravity. As the middle generation witnesses the passing of their elders it causes reflection on our own lives. Read more

(#6 in the series: Are You A Dreamer?)
I was predisposed to like the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” for two reasons. First, I had seen the real-life Christopher Gardner (the movie’s protagonist) relay his incredible story during a TV interview for “20/20”. Second, I like Will Smith. If I was wearing my movie critic hat, I could make a few suggestions as to some additional aspects I wished were included in the movie, but I won’t do that because regardless, the story is a wonderfully inspiring one. The movie’s message is uplifting and real. Read more
(#5 in the series: Are You A Dreamer?)
In the last few issues, we’ve talked about suspending your “logic filter” long enough to imagine your dreams. We’ve also acknowledged that some dreams simply serve to inform you about your deepest desires and are not meant to happen literally. What about the dream that you actually would like to see come true? When you experience a “That’s it!” moment and your dream is undeniably revealed to you, it can be exhilarating. Your heart is pumping and your brain is brimming with ideas, but as you begin crossing the bridge from dream to reality, that protective filter reengages and the haunting question returns: What if this is just a dream?
