You Have Options

More Than You Think

“Being wealthy is not about having money. It’s about having options.” That’s what Chris Rock told Oprah Winfrey in a recent interview. Commenting on his foray into live theatre, Chris framed it as part of his overall desire to try new things. “I should take complete advantage of the buffet that life is.” Speaking passionately he explained why it’s important to try new things, because then at least you will know: “You don’t like it because you tried it, not because you dismissed it.” Read more

A Surprising Invitation

I was sitting toward the front of the room, ready to be attentive to the speaker.  Before he began, he did a surprising thing.  He invited the audience to “get distracted”…to allow our minds to wander off during his talk.  I pictured being the speaker.  Didn’t he want us to listen carefully to the points he had prepared?  Then he explained his rationale.  It wasn’t that he didn’t want us to listen, however, if we drifted off, he wanted us to notice where we were going.  He said that this is often how the creative mind – divine inspiration even – speaks to us.  His invitation to get distracted was actually an instruction to pay attention to the ideas that occurred to us during his presentation. You’re Not Being Realistic

“I used to dream when I was younger but that got me into trouble.”  I knew what my client meant.  The “trouble” to which she referred was prior disappointment at dreams proven unrealistic. This kind of past experience can obstruct our ability to conceive of alternatives to current situations.  We often limit the scenarios we’ll even consider and prematurely filter out anything that seems too far-fetched.
