Overnight Success

Two years ago, while scanning the local entertainment scene for something different to do on my husband’s birthday, I found just the kind of event I had in mind at the MIM Music Theater in Phoenix. While unfamiliar with the artist, I was intrigued by the concert description. I liked her attitude. I liked her leather jacket. I liked her story of being rediscovered late in her career. And when I watched Bettye LaVette’s performance of the Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” at the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors, I clicked “buy tickets.” Read more

How Is Your Dream Changing?

Living the Dream

Clark Terry: Musician, composer and educator

A few weeks ago while looking for a movie to rent and in the mood for something uplifting, my husband and I opted for Keep on Keepin’ On, a documentary about trumpeter and jazz legend, Clark Terry. With a career that spanned over 70 years, Clark Terry is one of the most recorded musicians in the history of jazz. Read more

Protect Your Dream

(#6 in the series: Are You A Dreamer?)

Dreams Need Protecting

I was predisposed to like the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” for two reasons.  First, I had seen the real-life Christopher Gardner (the movie’s protagonist) relay his incredible story during a TV interview for “20/20”.  Second, I like Will Smith.  If I was wearing my movie critic hat, I could make a few suggestions as to some additional aspects I wished were included in the movie, but I won’t do that because regardless, the story is a wonderfully inspiring one.  The movie’s message is uplifting and real. Is This Just A Dream?

(#5 in the series: Are You A Dreamer?)

The Haunting Question

In the last few issues, we’ve talked about suspending your “logic filter” long enough to imagine your dreams.  We’ve also acknowledged that some dreams simply serve to inform you about your deepest desires and are not meant to happen literally.  What about the dream that you actually would like to see come true?  When you experience a “That’s it!” moment and your dream is undeniably revealed to you, it can be exhilarating.  Your heart is pumping and your brain is brimming with ideas, but as you begin crossing the bridge from dream to reality, that protective filter reengages and the haunting question returns: What if this is just a dream? Let Your Dream Inform You

(#4 in the series: Are You A Dreamer?)

Are Dreams Lofty or Practical?

Sometimes dreams already exist inside (As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to…) whereas other times you consciously develop a dream (In a few years, I can picture being…).  In either case, exactly what are you supposed to do with a dream once you have one? Read more

Get Distracted

(#3 in the series: Are You A Dreamer?)

A Surprising Invitation

I was sitting toward the front of the room, ready to be attentive to the speaker.  Before he began, he did a surprising thing.  He invited the audience to “get distracted”…to allow our minds to wander off during his talk.  I pictured being the speaker.  Didn’t he want us to listen carefully to the points he had prepared?  Then he explained his rationale.  It wasn’t that he didn’t want us to listen, however, if we drifted off, he wanted us to notice where we were going.  He said that this is often how the creative mind – divine inspiration even – speaks to us.  His invitation to get distracted was actually an instruction to pay attention to the ideas that occurred to us during his presentation. Why Even Dream?

(#2 in the series: Are You A Dreamer?)

You’re Not Being Realistic

“I used to dream when I was younger but that got me into trouble.”  I knew what my client meant.  The “trouble” to which she referred was prior disappointment at dreams proven unrealistic. This kind of past experience can obstruct our ability to conceive of alternatives to current situations.  We often limit the scenarios we’ll even consider and prematurely filter out anything that seems too far-fetched. Are You a Dreamer?

I Have a Dream

When Martin Luther King Jr. boldly projected these four words at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, he was not only permitting himself to have a dream, he was also inviting, empowering, and daring others to do the same. His vision was for an entire country, yet it also included a personal dream for his own children: that they “will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”.
