Following the Current

We’re Moving

Prior to our Alaska trip this past August, my husband Jess and I had taken one other cruise (in the Caribbean); but since that was many years ago, the details of what it’s like to be at sea had faded. As the ship departed from Vancouver, I was seated in a meeting room, attending a welcome event. It wasn’t until I glanced out the window that I noticed: We’re moving. No loud engines, no sudden starts, just the easy realization that the trip was underway. It was a feeling of both calm and excitement. Read more

Right Before You Shift

Recently, I had a holistic massage that incorporated an ancient Chinese healing modality called Chi Nei Tsang. This is a deep, gentle abdominal massage during which the practitioner provides feedback. Read more

Do You Have To Know?

The Question was the Reminder

I often joke that Letting Go has been one of my lifelong lessons. I say this with self-compassion and a colorful, true-story collection of Letting Go mishaps and victories. I continue to practice the artful balance of control and letting go. Over the years, I’ve become more comfortable with change. I’ve learned to trust and even to enjoy many of life’s question marks. Sandi’s Encounter

Hello! I’m happy to be writing to you, having just returned from a very special family vacation in Florida. The purpose of the trip was to fulfill two items on my mother-in-law’s bucket list: a visit to Key West and a swim with the dolphins. Read more

Trusting Your Clarity

(#2 in the series: Trust is an Essential Element)

Today’s feature continues the theme introduced in: Trust is an Essential Element. I wrote this article in 2006; the now-ubiquitous quote from Steve Jobs aptly addresses the question of trust and clarity. Rixt Kuiper, the friend referenced below, tells me how much it affected her when I first shared the idea of trusting decisions you’ve made “in the light.”  She says it’s something that has stayed with her to this day. Out of the Mud

It’s Transformation Time

All nature is in a constant state of transformation and we are especially reminded of this now, as the spring blooms begin to appear. Likewise, each of us is always transforming and at times quite intentionally, whether seeking to bring about a change in our careers, fitness level, relationships, or finances. We are programmed to evolve. Yet the moment we identify the desired change, there it is: the anxious realization of our current state. We want to be there but we are here. How do we move? Read more

Learn As You Go

But You Don’t Know Anything About It

We were seated next to each other at a dinner party for mutual friends who were about to move cross-country. Val, an executive for a large non-profit organization, asked me a question I’m often asked: How did you make the change? She was familiar with coaching since she and several of her colleagues had worked with an executive coach over the course of their careers. Val wanted to know more about the kind of coaching I do and how I transitioned to the field from my prior work. She stated that for a while now, she has been entertaining the idea of becoming a coach and then she added what stops her: But I don’t know anything about it. Read more

The Current Is Always New

You Are New

Same old same old. Get up and do it all over again. These are the expressions we use and how it can feel when the alarm clock goes off in the morning. It takes a conscious effort to approach the same daily routines with newness, yet whether we remember it or not, each day is created new for us and each day, we are able to create anew. Read more

Take Your Life Off Hold

Ready to Make Some Changes

When Marcella called me, she introduced herself as a long-time ezine subscriber and stated, “I’m ready to make some changes.” Having gained perspective on a long-term and unhealthy relationship that ended two years ago, Marcella summarized what she learned: “You can’t put your life on hold because someone else isn’t ready to do something.” Recognizing that she has “experienced a shift,” Marcella now wants more for herself. Your Ticket to Change

“Acceptance of prevailing standards often means we have no standards of our own.”
— Jean Toomer

ticket stubsWhat Does It Take?

For most of us, the ticket to positive change is some amount of pain or dissatisfaction with the status quo. The degree of pain that precedes taking action will influence whether we consider that change to be proactive or reactive — a change initiated by choice or due to necessity.

What is the threshold of discomfort that it takes to motivate you to make a change for the better? Read more
